Sherry Ryans, Student Dobyns-Bennett Regional Adult High School Education was always a struggle for me. During my school career, I was held back twice. Needless to say, my self-esteem went out the back door. By the time I was seventeen, I was pregnant, married and simply dropped out of school. Then feelings of shame and disappointment took over. Also, when I look back over events and circumstances, two facts jump to the front of my mind. My parents did not feel that a girl's education was as important as a boy's. Perhaps that was the mind- set then. I have often wondered. The other fact remains that I have three other siblings that did not graduate either. At one point, though, two of my sisters heard about Dobyns-Bennet Regional Adult High School. They decided to go back to school and obtain their diploma. I secretly admired them and wanted to go back with them; however, I did not. Once a person's esteem has been lowered, it often takes a crane to lift it back up. Graduation 1996 rolled around and I attended that of my sisters'. I felt confident that night (after seeing the proud faces of all the graduates) that I could get my diploma also. Yet, again I felt that uncertainty return when I seriously considered going back to school. I must be nuts. I could not leave my job on a whim to pursue such a notion. I had been out of school for twenty-six years, had a difficult time while in school, and furthermore, why should I torture myself? Then I realized that promotions were never part of my vocabulary while working because I did not have my diploma. I finally decided to call my former school to get my transcripts. I was filled with nervous dread at the prospect of having to confront any person remotely connected to that institution. After all, it represented failure to me. I did call and I did go back to school. After I realized that the Adult High School was there to encourage learning at my own pace, provide individual assistance to me as a student and allow me to maintain my dignity, I was ready to go after my diploma. I feel the shame no longer. I have confidence. I have determination. I realize that I am not the only individual with problems and concerns. I just want to be different in how I choose to handle them. It is amazing what education does for a person. One year ago I could not have relayed this story so readily and confidently. My advice to those who may read this is: Get the courage to make the first start. Sherry Ryans, Student | ||||||
