It's Heaven! When my husband and I retired at age 51, we wanted to spend more time with each other, and to get away from the stress of the workplace and the alarm clock ringing at 4:30 each morning. It's been over 3 years now and we haven't regretted one second of it. It's a wonderful life for us -- it's like we started our lives over again at age 18 (Except this time we don't have to go to work to earn a living!). When we retired, my mother was critically ill and this gave us the opportunity to be able to spend so much quality time with her during the first 2 years of retirement. She's passed away now, but I wouldn't take anything for all that time we were able to spend with her. We seem to stay on the road traveling somewhere -- we just recently returned from Italy and Greece; we go to Las Vegas once a year, to the beach a couple of times a year, to Atlantic City several times a year, take a cruise, etc. When we're not traveling, we have friends of all ages we try to see as much as possible. I have lunch at least once a week with the girls in the office where I formerly worked and I get to visit a close friend regularly who is in a nursing home. We also go to the golf course and driving range. My husband has been teaching me to play golf, and it's really a lot of fun to be able to do this together. We exercise at Eastman at least 3 times a week (Fun? Not really, but we feel more like doing ti now that we're not working.). I love to read, and I've read more books since I retired than I can count. We both love to do jigsaw puzzles so whenever we have a lull in our schedule, we get out a puzzle. It's really nice to be able to get up in the morning when you want to, have a leisurely breakfast, and read the paper and work the crossword puzzle together without being on any kind of time schedule. We do what we want to do when we want to do it; and if we don't get around to something, we'll do it tomorrow! One of these day I have plans to do volunteer work at the library, hospital, etc; but so far, I haven't had time to think about that. I guess what really sums up the best of retirement for me is when we're returning from a trip and I think about all the times when I was working, and I would say, "I wish I didn't have to go back to work tomorrow!" and now I don't have to, and it's wonderful!! | ||||||
