Betty Lehan Harragan's book, Games Mother Never Taught You was the inspiration for this top ten list. Although published in 1977, Harragan's classic is still relevant to today's woman working in corporate America. 2. Line positions lead to the top, staff positions do not. Again the military model. Staff positions are lateral positions supporting the line positions. Secretaries, clerks, attorneys, and accountants, for example are staff positions. They support the works of the officers. If you want to rise in the corporation, make sure you are an officer. 3. Learn the rules of your company's game and become a player. Corporations are hierarchical in structure, but employees in them play a football game. There are huddles, goal lines, positions to play, passing, punting. This may seem childish, but, after all, football is a boy's sport. 4. Aim for the top. Why not go for the ultimate job? It is an attainable goal. Just don't tell anyone who ambitious you are and that you're out to oust the CEO. 5. Don't take everything personally. If you are playing a team sport, you soon learn that you win some and you lose some. It's part of the game. Don't be labeled a sore loser -- a big corporate no-no -- by taking personally what is just a temporary setback. If you must have a good cry or wallow in self-pity for a while, call call a trusted friend after business hours and indulge. Don't bring your temporary defeat back to the office. 6. Play your position. Be careful if you are doing more than what is written in your job description. Women frequently fall into the trap of being helpful and generous to their co-workers or even to other supervisors with their time and talents. You may not be rewarded for your extra help; in fact, you may be penalized for doing someone else's job. A football player can lose a game by being offside or trying to play a teammate's position. 7. Never disagree with, contradict, or belittle your boss in the presence of others. It's equivalent to treason, or talking back to a football coach. If you must have a discussion with your boss, do it one-to-one behind closed doors. If the situation is intolerable, request a transfer to another department -- or quit. 8. An executive training program is to a corporation what West Point is to the army. The pay may not be great, but the program is corporate officer training school. This is often the entry level to the plum line management jobs in the corporation. Don't be foolish and pass up a chance to be groomed for greater things, even if executive training means a low starting salary and a stint in the mail room. Take it! 9. Don't be afraid to call a foul a foul. Although playing by the rules is critical for corporate success, bending of the rules is an everyday occurrence. If people in the corporation are bending rules at your expense, call them on it -- preferably in a staff meeting. 10. Sing your own praises. If you were responsible for a win within your company, let the higher-ups know about it. This is known as self-promotion. Women are notoriously lousy at it. Watch the rising stars in the company and learn how they do. Copyright 1996 by Thomas J.
