Literacy Council of Kingsport, Inc. 400 Broad Street, 2nd floor, Kingsport Library Kingsport, TN 38660 423-392-4643 423-224-2558 |
The Literacy Council of Kingsport, Inc. was
created by volunteers who desired to teach adults
to read and write. Using Laubach Literacy
Action materials, volunteers teach adults, 18 and
over, to read. When the student is able to read
at the sixth grade level, he or she is referred to
adult education or GED programs. Tutors must complete a 10 hour workshop, usually held in the spring and fall, before being certified to teach one-on-one. Once a student is assigned, the tutor and student decide on a time and place to meet for one or two hours each week. The lessons are private and confidential. In fiscal year 1996-1997 1432 tutor hours were donated to 39 students and 226 hours were donated by the board and volunteers to council programs. Approximately 18 persons are on the waiting list for tutor training in the fall. The Literacy Council worked with the Kingsport Kiwansis Club to videotape grandparents reading stories for their grandchildren as a Christmas fundraiser in 1996. This will likely be repeated. The Literacy Council cooperates with all adult education and community organizations interested in promoting literacy by providing tutors where appropriate and support where needed. The council is currently working with the Kingsport Regional Educational Alliance (KREA) in support of familyliteracy projects in Sullivan, Hawkins, and Scott Counties. For additional information, or to volunteer, please contact the Literacy Council office or call Shirley Jackson, president, at 423-239-5042. Donations are most welcome, too! | |||||||||||||||||
